GameFi Cost Update — Week of October 5, 2026

Across the nine chains we track, one game transaction cost a weighted $0.0992 in the week of September 28–October 4, 2026 — down from $0.0996 without a single chain changing its fee, the third straight week the composite moved on weights alone. The week's custody story closed instead of opened: Bitget finished reopening every withdrawal rail it froze on September 24, with USDT on TRON flowing again from September 30. This is the October 5 edition of our weekly cost update.

FormulaWeighted average cost = Σ(cost per tx × chain daily tx) ÷ Σ(chain daily tx) = $0.0992 across the nine chains.

1. The nine-chain cost table

Chain Cost per game tx GameFi DAU 50 tx/day 500 tx/day
Ronin $0.0000 306,100 $0.00 $0.00
Immutable $0.0000 142,300 $0.00 $0.00
Solana $0.00023 208,200 $0.35 $3.45
Polygon $0.0204 68,100 $30.60 $306.00
Base $0.0406 41,500 $60.90 $609.00
Arbitrum $0.0792 44,300 $118.80 $1,188.00
BNB Chain $0.0936 100,900 $140.40 $1,404.00
TRON $0.7388 116,400 $1,108.14 $11,081.45
Ethereum $2.9150 25,200 $4,372.50 $43,725.00

TRON's per-transaction figure is the median energy-rental route: 64,285 energy for a standard USDT-sized transfer at the market's 34 SUN median. The burn fallback and stake routes price differently — section 4 breaks out all three.

2. What changed this week

Chain Per-tx cost Change Note
Ronin $0.0000 flat Gas-free by design; Karst upgrade lands October 7 with terms published — none touch fees
Immutable $0.0000 flat Gas-free by design
Solana $0.00023 flat Base fee unchanged since last measurement
Polygon $0.0204 flat —
Base $0.0406 flat OP Stack gas stable through the week
Arbitrum $0.0792 flat —
BNB Chain $0.0936 flat —
TRON $0.7388 flat Energy 100 sun; rental median 34 SUN unchanged
Ethereum $2.9150 flat —

Nine chains, zero fee changes, third week running. The weighted average still moved — $0.0996 to $0.0992 — because the transaction mix shifted further from Ethereum, whose transactions fell 2.4%, toward sub-dollar chains. A composite average tracks the weights; the prices underneath did not move. The week's only TRON transfer event was custody-side: Bitget's USDT withdrawals on TRON resumed September 30, restoring access without touching a single chain parameter.

3. What free doesn't cover

Ronin and Immutable carry 448,400 daily players — 42.6% of the network — at a displayed cost of $0.0000. Free means the chain charges no gas, not that playing costs nothing:

Hidden cost Where it bites Typical size
Reward-token dilution Any play-and-earn payout Moves on unlock days — SUI's roughly $15.5 million unlock on October 1 is this week's example
Custodial risk Balances held on venues Bitget's revised $387.5M breach loss, with withdrawals fully reopened October 2
Bridging Moving assets in and out Priced on the bridge, not the chain; can exceed a month of gas
Failure and retries Any chain A dropped transaction costs its gas on paid chains even when it fails

On the two free chains a player's marginal transaction is genuinely free — that is real and it is why 42.6% of players are there. The table below it is where the rest of the cost of playing lives.

4. TRON's three payment routes

One TRON game transaction (64,285 energy, standard transfer), three ways to pay:

Route Mechanics Per tx Monthly at 15 tx/day
Rent energy (34 SUN median) Rent 64,285 energy from a rental market $0.7388 $332.44
Stake TRX Stake ~6,703 TRX (~$2,266) yielding 64,285 energy/day at 9.59 energy/TRX/day ~$0 marginal (capital at work) ~$0 after stake
Burn TRX Pay 6.4285 TRX of energy at 100 sun/energy $2.1728 $977.77
FormulaRental saving = 1 − $0.7388 ÷ $2.1728 = 66.0% versus the burn fallback.
FormulaStake requirement = 64,285 ÷ 9.59 ≈ 6,703 TRX (~$2,266 at $0.338).
FormulaBurn-parity energy price = $2.1728 ÷ 64,285 = $0.0000338 per energy — exactly 100 sun at $0.338 TRX.

Staking breaks even against renting once the market price of rented energy exceeds roughly 12 SUN — the market floor is 22 SUN, so anyone with ~$2,266 of idle TRX and a daily transaction habit is better off staking than renting, and both crush burning. The rental market listed 22–38 SUN across the week with an indicated range to 74 SUN; at 74 SUN the same transfer rents for $1.6079, still 26% below burning.

The week's TRXS disclosure adds context to the stake row rather than changing it: the Cboe-listed fund reported 89.85% of its $50.39 million in net assets staked — but it stakes for validator yield, not energy delegation, so none of that $45.28 million adds rental supply to the market that sets the 34 SUN median. The full arithmetic is in this week's deep dive.

5. The four player types

Monthly TRON bills at the median rental route versus burning, unchanged this week:

Player type Tx/day Monthly rental Monthly burn Saving
Casual 3 $66.49 $195.55 66.0%
Regular 15 $332.44 $977.77 66.0%
Grinder 50 $1,108.14 $3,259.25 66.0%
Studio 500 $11,081.45 $32,592.50 66.0%

For contrast, the same four personas on the other paid chains: a 50-tx/day grinder costs $30.60 on Polygon, $118.80 on Arbitrum, $140.40 on BNB Chain and $4,372.50 on Ethereum. The persona question — rent, stake or burn — only seriously exists on TRON, where the route spread is 2.9×; everywhere else the fee is the fee.

6. The new-address penalty

The first transfer to an address that has never held the token costs 130,285 energy instead of 64,285, charged to the sender on behalf of the recipient:

Transfer Energy Burn cost Rental cost (34 SUN)
To a known address 64,285 $2.1728 $0.7388
To a fresh address 130,285 $4.4036 $1.4972
FormulaFresh-address multiplier = 130,285 ÷ 64,285 = 2.03×.

Game payouts to new players hit this constantly — every onboarding that sends a first reward to a wallet that has never held USDT or the game token pays the 2.03× rate. Rental absorbs most of it (the fresh-address rental premium is $0.7584, not the $2.2308 burn gap), but batch-payout studios should price onboarding on the 130,285 figure, not the 64,285 one.

7. Wallet-level fee wars: the zero-gas window and GasFree

Binance Wallet's campaign remains the live cost experiment on TRON: from September 23 to December 22, USDT and TRC-20 transfers sent through the wallet carry zero gas, backed by TRON DAO with limited spots. After the window, qualifying transfers revert to 1 USDT per transaction. Alongside it, Binance's USDT-as-fee-payer feature on BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum, Solana and TRON changes the friction, not the fee — you can pay gas in USDT, but the underlying network charge still goes to validators.

TRON transfer route Who pays Per standard tx Per fresh-address tx
Binance Wallet, during campaign TRON DAO subsidy $0.00 $0.00
Binance Wallet, after campaign Sender, flat $1.00 $1.00
Energy rental (34 SUN) Sender $0.7388 $1.4972
GasFree (stablecoin transfers) Sender, capped ≤ $1.00 ≤ $1.00
Burn TRX Sender $2.1728 $4.4036
FormulaPost-campaign anchor: 1 − $0.7388 ÷ $1.00 = 26.1% — renting energy stays cheaper than the 1-USDT discounted fee.

GasFree, the separate TRON service that lets users transfer USDT and USDD without holding TRX, keeps its ceiling at the same $1.00 the Binance endgame lands on — which makes that figure a consolidating anchor for the wallet-transfer market rather than one product's price. The deep read on what ninety free days do to cost expectations, and what happens on December 23, is in the September deep dive.

8. What would change this table

Four inputs move these numbers; all four were stable through the window:

  • The energy price — 100 sun per unit since TRON's 2025 proposal. A change reprices every TRON route at once.
  • The rental market median — 34 SUN held all week. The 22 SUN floor is the binding constraint on how cheap renting can get.
  • TRX itself — the $0.338 reference converts energy into dollars; a large TRX move changes dollar bills but not the 66.0% rental saving, which is a ratio of two TRX prices.
  • Native gas markets — Solana's base fee, the L2 gas markets, Ethereum's blob-and-basefee mix. The nearest scheduled change is calendar-driven, not fee-driven: Ronin's Karst upgrade lands October 7 with its terms published, and none of them move the fee line — October's unlock cadence, from SUI on October 1 to Ethena's investor overhang on October 5, moves reward treasuries rather than per-transaction gas.

TRON ecosystem context this week — the TRXS ETF's closing bell and $50.39 million book disclosure, the mandatory node upgrade, the TRON Inc. purchase — moves adoption and uptime, not the fee stack. We recheck all four inputs every week.

FAQ

Did the Bitget reopen change TRON transfer costs?

No. The freeze was venue-side — Bitget paused its own withdrawal processing while the security review ran — and USDT withdrawals on TRON resumed September 30. Every chain fee in the table above is identical to last week's; the weighted average moved from $0.0996 to $0.0992 on transaction mix alone.

Why did the weighted average fall to $0.0992 if no fee changed?

Mix. The composite is a transaction-weighted average; Ethereum, the $2.9150 chain, lost transaction share (−2.4%) while sub-dollar chains gained it. With every price frozen, the weights alone moved the average from $0.0996 to $0.0992 — the third straight week the composite moved without a price change.

What is the cheapest way to send USDT on TRON right now?

Through Binance Wallet during the campaign: zero, if spots are available. In general and after December 22: renting energy at the 34 SUN median, $0.7388 per standard transfer — 26.1% cheaper than the campaign's own 1-USDT endgame and 66.0% cheaper than burning.

Does the TRXS ETF's staking compete with energy rental?

No. The fund stakes its TRX to validators for yield; energy rental supply comes from holders who delegate their staked TRX as energy. Those are different uses of the same stake, and the fund is not in the rental market. Game transaction costs — $0.7388 rented, $2.1728 burned — are unchanged.

Does staking still beat renting?

For anyone with ~6,703 TRX (~$2,266) of idle capital and a daily transaction habit, yes — staking yields the 64,285 energy a daily transfer needs at 9.59 energy/TRX/day, and the 12 SUN breakeven sits well below the market's 22 SUN floor. The math is in section 4.

Where do these prices come from?

Live network parameters (energy at 100 sun, gas markets per chain) and the energy rental market's listed prices, sampled through the week. The full method note is in the data report.
