Weekly GameFi News Review

GameFi Weekly News Review — September 14–20, 2026

Across the nine chains we track, 1,042,300 people played on-chain games each day in the week of September 14–20, 2026 — the first weekly expansion in a month, up 2.2% from the week before. Below, every dated item is a real event from that window, linked to a mainstream outlet, the official announcement behind it, or the primary data source it is measured from. Where I add my own estimate, I say so.

The week in three numbers:

The window's chain-level items split between a capacity upgrade on Solana, a TRON adoption milestone, and a games-publisher partnership in Asia.

Solana activates Transaction V1, raising the max transaction size to 4,096 bytes

Tue, Sep 15 · Source: Solana (official changelog) · solana · infrastructure

Solana activated its Transaction V1 format on mainnet at the start of epoch 1035 on September 15, lifting the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes — about 3.3× more room per transaction. The change comes from SIMD-0296, which raises the ceiling, and SIMD-0385, which defines the v1 message format. Legacy and v0 formats still work, so ordinary transfers are unaffected, and the upgrade does not change fees, throughput or confirmation speed. The extra space lets developers fit zero-knowledge proofs, large multisig approvals and batched operations into one atomic transaction instead of several chained ones.

Our Take

This is a developer-capacity upgrade, not a player-cost change — and that distinction is exactly why it belongs in a GameFi cost column. Game contracts that needed multiple signed transactions (guild payouts, complex mint-and-stake flows) can now settle in one call, which trims the number of signatures a player pays for. On Solana the per-action fee is already $0.00023, so the saving is latency and failure-risk more than cents; on a paid chain the same consolidation is real money. We track the player-side numbers in the data report.

TRON's total value on chain reaches a $145B all-time high as the staked TRX ETF extends to Webull and SoFi

Thu, Sep 17 · Source: TRONSCAN and TRON DAO · tron · on-chain-data

TRONSCAN reported on September 17 that total value on chain across the network reached $145 billion, a new all-time high, reflecting continued stablecoin activity and asset accumulation. On the same day TRON DAO said the Canary Staked TRX ETF is now available on Webull, and separately on SoFi, extending traditional-finance access to TRX beyond the Cboe BZX listing that went live on September 9. TRON Inc. also disclosed a treasury purchase that took its holdings above 714.8 million TRX.

Our Take

More TRX locked through institutional wrappers is the denominator in the 9.59 energy-per-TRX-per-day figure that decides whether self-staking beats renting. This week's move does not change the energy price, but it slowly shifts the staking base the way last week's ETF listing did. For a TRON game studio the practical read is unchanged: renting at the market's 34 SUN median still costs $0.7388 per transfer, a 66.0% saving over the $2.17 burn fallback. The route arithmetic is in this week's cost update.

CMGE teams up with HashKey Group on Web3 games and a game platform

Tue, Sep 15 · Source: AAStocks · bnb-chain · partnership

CMGE Technology Group (00302.HK), the Chinese mobile-games publisher, announced on September 15 a strategic partnership with HashKey Group to develop Web3 games and a Web3 game platform. CMGE will contribute its games IP and production experience; HashKey will provide blockchain infrastructure and compliant digital-asset settlement. The two said the tie-up accelerates CMGE's Web3 push and extends HashKey's reach into the games industry.

Our Take

A major publisher pairing with a licensed exchange operator is the structure GameFi has been missing: distribution plus a compliant rails provider in one deal. The cost angle is the settlement layer — if rewards and items settle in stablecoins, the per-transaction fee is whatever the chain charges, which is why a publisher's chain choice is a margin decision, not a detail. We price that choice across nine chains every week.

Games and launches

Two launch-side items: a live on-chain survival game and a creator-tool rebuild aimed at professional studios.

Nightshades, an on-chain survivor game built on Uniswap v4 hooks, opens its launch

Mon, Sep 14 · Source: Clutch Markets (X) · ethereum · play-to-earn

Nightshades, described as the first on-chain survivor game built on Uniswap v4 hooks, detailed its launch mechanics on September 14: an NFT mint and faction-token allocation ahead of go-live, with snapshots set for Monday September 14 at 1pm EDT. The game uses hook-based liquidity for in-game mechanics and runs on Ethereum mainnet rather than a gaming-specific chain.

Our Take

Building a game on Uniswap v4 hooks is a bet that general-purpose DeFi infrastructure is now expressive enough to host gameplay, skipping a dedicated gaming chain entirely. The cost consequence is blunt: every hook interaction is an Ethereum mainnet transaction at $2.9150 a pop, which prices this format at the most expensive end of our nine-chain set. Novel, but only affordable for high-value actions — not a casual loop.

The Sandbox unveils Sandbox Studio, an AI-assisted editor for Unity and Unreal developers

Tue, Sep 15 · Source: The Sandbox (X) · immutable · creator-tools

The Sandbox revealed on September 15 that it has spent nearly three years rebuilding its creation tool into Sandbox Studio, an AI-assisted editor aimed at professional developers fluent in Unity and Unreal rather than the no-code audience the original Game Maker courted. CEO Robby Yung said a public launch is provisionally planned for October, following a run of controlled game jams. Games made in Studio can be exported to the web, Telegram, mobile app stores and Steam. An AI agent handles repetitive work — debugging, testing, content updates and porting — while creative direction stays human.

Our Take

The interesting cost signal is the export-anywhere plan. A creator who ships one title to five platforms multiplies revenue without multiplying the chain-specific transaction load, because the on-chain pieces stay on The Sandbox's own stack. That is the opposite of the walled-garden model, and it treats distribution, not gas, as the binding constraint on a game's economics. We cover the chain-choice side of the same question in the intelligence briefing.

Tokens, NFTs and in-game economy

The token side of the window was an unlock cluster, with Arbitrum and LayerZero the two largest dated items.

06

Arbitrum unlocks 92.65M ARB, about $12.3M, on September 16

Wed, Sep 16 · Source: Dropstab unlock calendar · arbitrum · economic-model

Arbitrum released 92.65 million ARB on September 16, worth roughly $12.3 million at prevailing prices and equal to about 1.59% of circulating supply, according to vesting trackers. The tranche splits across investor, team and DAO-treasury allocations and is a recurring monthly event rather than a one-off cliff. Arbitrum sits in the middle of our nine-chain cost table at $0.0792 per game transaction.

Our Take

Unlocks matter to GameFi because they change who can keep paying for transactions. A mid-cap token releasing 1.59% of float adds sell pressure that can depress reward-token value, and studios that price payouts in ARB absorb that repricing. The chain fee is independent of the token price — Arbitrum still costs $0.0792 a transaction regardless of where ARB trades — but the reward math a guild runs is not.

07

LayerZero releases 25.71M ZRO as the week's unlocks top $746M

Sun, Sep 20 · Source: Dropstab unlock calendar · gamefi · economic-model

LayerZero unlocked 25.71 million ZRO on September 20, worth about $26 million and 4.22% of circulating supply — the single largest dollar release of the window. Trackers put total scheduled token unlocks across the September 14–20 window above $746 million, with Bedrock (40.63M BR, ~$12.7M) and Connex (1.32M CONX, ~$13.2M) also releasing supply on September 15–20. ZRO's release recurs monthly and runs through mid-2027.

Our Take

A $746M unlock week is a liquidity event for the tokens GameFi players earn and trade, not a chain-fee event. But it is the same population: the people claiming airdrops and farming rewards are the ones paying per-transaction costs on the chains below. When token value softens, the real cost of an in-game action — measured in the token, not dollars — rises even if the gas number does not. That is why we separate "what the chain costs" from "what the reward is worth" in every report.

Security, policy and infrastructure

One TRON-touching security item and the regulatory unlock of the window, with the Chainflip exploit carried as a spillover note.

U.S. DOJ seeks to seize about $61.2M USDT held across 10 TRON wallets

Mon, Sep 14 · Source: CNBC · tron · policy

U.S. prosecutors filed a civil forfeiture complaint on September 14 seeking to seize roughly $61.2 million in USDT (61,192,367.59 USDT) spread across ten TRON addresses, alleging the funds are tied to a money-laundering network that processed more than $1.5 billion from sanctioned Iranian oil sales. Tether had pre-frozen the targeted balances before the filing, so there was no immediate peg or liquidity shock; CNBC and Yahoo Finance carried the filing.

Our Take

This is a counterparty and compliance story, not a GameFi exploit, but it lands on TRON's stablecoin base — the same $94 billion USDT float that game payouts and GasFree transfers run on. A freeze of this size is a policy signal, not a technical failure, and it does not change the energy math we publish. It does, however, raise the compliance cost of any venue that touches those flows, which is a quiet tax on the rail.

Spillover from last week

Chainflip confirmed roughly 736,442.17 USDT was taken in an exploit affecting its Tron USDT handling. The incident occurred on September 12 and Chainflip disclosed it on September 13, pausing the network while a fix and restart plan are finalised; the pause carried into this week's window, which is why it appears here as context rather than a dated item. Chainflip said all other funds are unaffected and secure and that impacted users will be made whole. The lesson for GameFi is the one we repeated after Hemi: if a contract can move funds and update state in the same call, assume it will be called with hostile intent.

SEC issues its Innovation Exemption, opening on-chain tokenized-stock trading for five years

Thu, Sep 17 · Source: SEC (official order) · policy · infrastructure

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission issued an order on September 17 granting temporary, conditional exemptive relief to Tokenized Securities Venues (TSVs) — letting them trade tokenized National Market System stock through permissioned automated market makers and liquidity pools, and exempting certain liquidity providers from the dealer definition. The relief expires five years after publication. Conditions include limits on the number of symbols and volume traded, equivalent rights for token holders, an issuer objection window, public and auditable smart contracts deployed on a public permissionless ledger, and trading halts aligned with the primary listing exchange. Robinhood and Coinbase shares rose on the news.

Our Take

This is a regulatory unlock, not a cost cut — but it routes a whole new asset class onto the same public ledgers GameFi already uses, and the settlement cost of a tokenized-stock trade is simply the venue chain's gas. On Arbitrum that is $0.0792 a trade; on TRON, $0.7388; on Ethereum, $2.9150. The exemption's "public permissionless ledger" condition is what makes those chains the venue, not a private one. We work the full settlement-cost comparison in this week's deep dive.

The week's cost context

Every chain-level number below comes from the same week's measurement; the nine-chain table, persona monthly costs and the TRON route comparison are broken out in full in the cost update.

Chain Cost per game tx GameFi DAU DAU WoW
Ronin $0.0000 302,100 +1.2%
Immutable $0.0000 141,800 −0.2%
Solana $0.00023 207,300 +6.5%
Polygon $0.0204 69,400 −1.7%
Base $0.0406 40,300 +3.1%
Arbitrum $0.0792 43,100 +7.2%
BNB Chain $0.0936 99,900 +1.5%
TRON $0.7388 112,500 +2.5%
Ethereum $2.9150 25,900 −2.6%

The network turned up after three weeks of decline, and the growth was broad: six of nine chains added players, led by Arbitrum at +7.2% and Solana at +6.5%. The two free chains held their share near 42.6% of all players, and TRON extended its run of gains to a second week. Costs did not move — every per-transaction figure above is unchanged from last week — so this expansion is a distribution story, not a price one. The full read is in the weekly data report and the intelligence briefing.

Frequently Asked Questions

The U.S. SEC's Innovation Exemption on September 17, which opens on-chain trading of tokenized U.S. stocks through permissioned AMM venues for five years. On the chain side, Solana shipped Transaction V1 (4,096-byte transactions) on September 15, and TRON's total value on chain reached a $145B all-time high on September 17.

Which chain had the strongest week?

Arbitrum, which added 7.2% in daily players to 43,100 and led all nine chains we track, followed by Solana at +6.5% to 207,300. TRON extended its gain to a second week at +2.5% to 112,500 despite carrying the second-highest per-transaction cost in the set at $0.7388.

Were there any game launches this week?

Two worth noting: Nightshades, an on-chain survivor game built on Uniswap v4 hooks, opened its launch mechanics on September 14, and The Sandbox unveiled Sandbox Studio, an AI-assisted editor for Unity and Unreal developers, on September 15 with a provisional October public launch.

Was there a hack in the window?

No in-window exploit on the nine gaming chains. The one relevant event is a spillover: Chainflip confirmed about 736,442 USDT was stolen from a contract handling Tron USDT in an incident dated September 12 and disclosed September 13, with the network still paused as this week opened; it says impacted users will be made whole. Separately, U.S. prosecutors filed to seize about $61.2M USDT across ten TRON wallets tied to a sanctioned-entity money-laundering probe.

How much does a TRON USDT transfer cost now?

Burning TRX costs about $2.17 per standard transfer — 64,285 energy at the 100 sun price with TRX near $0.34 — and roughly double that, $4.40, to an address that has never held USDT. Renting at the market's 34 SUN median brings the same transfer to $0.7388, a 66.0% saving. Any guide still quoting 210 sun per energy is out of date by more than a year.

Where do the figures in this review come from?

Primary data and official disclosures first, then the outlet that carried them: the SEC's own order for the exemption; Solana's changelog for Transaction V1; TRONSCAN and TRON DAO for the value-on-chain high and ETF expansion; AAStocks for the CMGE-HashKey partnership; Dropstab for the unlock calendar; CNBC for the DOJ forfeiture; Chainflip's own notice for the exploit; and the projects' X accounts for Nightshades and Sandbox Studio.
